How to Be Safe on MySpace


Myspace is an online social networking site where people can create personal profiles of themselves and friend other people. As with other online social networks you should take precautions for your safety.

Steps

  1. Don't put too much personal information on your page. Personal information can include your address, where you go to school, your full name, your workplace, and places you frequent are a few examples. Someone who means harm can use this information for their benefit.
  2. Avoid drama. People can post nasty things on your profile. Delete those comments and block those people if need be. Don't become sucked into the drama.
    • To avoid nasty comments being placed on your profile, set your profile settings so that you have to approve comments before they go on your profile.
  3. Remember you are not anonymous on your MySpace profile. You may not have posted your full name, but others may know who you are from your pictures or other information.
  4. Protect yourself by making your profile private. There is a feature that allows you to make your profile private so only your friends can see your entire profile.

Tips

  • Be considerate with other people's information as well. Don't put your friends full names or other identifying information on your profile.
  • If you post pictures of yourself, make sure they do not include any public landmarks (such as street signs or mailboxes) that can be easily identified.
  • Do not post half naked pictures of yourself as you are more likely to be stalked than having a picture of yourself with attire that is appropriate for school or in the general public. If your parents don't allow you to have pictures online, don't do it. Just keep it "no photo" or have a picture of something that doesn't have you or your friends and family in it.

Warnings

  • If you are embarrassed or nervous about showing your parents your MySpace page, this is a sign that your page may be inappropriate. Review your page and remove anything that gives you that nervous or embarrassed vibe.
  • If you are concerned about a user who pesters or harasses you on MySpace, report them! Nobody likes those kind's people. If the person is in school, talk to your school counselor or principal. If the person is in your local area but not in school, contact the police, social worker, or sheriff if it gets out of hand.
